Anyways I noticed on a S&D group on Facebook that there is a very recent message on the page from Ann Henderson-Stires who played the original Susan. Thanks for sharing, Col! Maybe she will start posting over here and we can have a 'Battle of the Susies'!

Anyone know why Ann left the series? I'm not a big fan of re-casts and I personally feel that they never work, so for that reason alone I never much took to the second Susan. The character was good and eminently watchable at all times, but to me it just wasn't Susan. I would have far preferred for Ann to have come back to the fold and resume the role and for Oriana to have played a separate character altogether.

Ann left the series as she moved to America after her wedding in the early 80's and has been there ever since so she wouldnt have been able to reprise the role of Susan later in the series. Here is a post that Ann's husband wrote on the facebook group-
Ann J Henderson-Stires is my wife for 30 years. I still remember the day we met. It was October 03, 1980 and we fell in love at first sight. I was in the US Navy and sailed the next day. We stayed in contact and after a long distant relationship we married in Melbourne on November 28, 1981. She is my best friend and still the love of my life.

Beautiful words and sentiments from Ann's husband there. It's marvellous that they've been together so long and are still so clearly committed to one another, especially in this age of separation and divorce. Thanks for the info, Col. Despite having watched S&D since it started (more or less), I know so little about the behind-the-scenes stuff. As you say, giving the circumstances, it would have been impossible for Ann to have reprised the role. A HUGE shame, in some respects, as I really loved some of the first Susan's character traits. Still, I enjoyed Oriana's take on the character, too, so all's good.

No probs, I saw her post and thought a few on here may like to see it too, especially as the 'other' Susan has contributed to this site . I have to admit I really like both versions of Susan. Actually thinking about it had Ann not married and moved to the States she may never have left the show,so she wouldnt have needed to return/them re-cast the role and we wouldnt have ever got to see Oriana in the role and I think that would have been a pity as they both put their own mark on the character and played Susan very well.
