How bad were they? What were they DOING in the show? And how weird was it that Luke Carlyle and Jeff were supposed to be best friends?

Unluckiest family EVER! Jeff died in a fire, Mike died after a work accident, Jim was blown up in a truck. Heather adopted a baby that turned out to be Beryl's and even Jeff and Katie's dog Titus was killed after eating snailbait! ;D

I didn't mind Heather, Katy or Jim. I cheered when Jeff was killed off.

I could never take to the O'Briens either - except maybe Katie, who was the only one involved in the first storyline I followed when I first discovered the series on ITV - the death of Karen Fox. In my first viewings of those episodes, I tended to fast-forward through the O'Briens, and they disappeared soon after that anyway.
I didn't find much to enjoy in their earlier storylines either, when I saw them in the UK Gold screenings (and again later when they were re-run on channel five).

Hi Dee You make me laugh, saying you're glad about not being related to the O'Brian family. They were pretty dull though! I found all of the Craig and Debbie stuff boring.. What was their purpose in the show?, how come they lasted so long! Was Austraila day, when the TVam Sons and Daughters thing was on??

and Jeff well with the majority I was glad when he went! Me too, though I did find it amusing when David kept describing him as being "on the grog". Another of David's aussie-isms I liked was "you mongrel" ;D

It was just weird with o'brien family, cos I reckon up to that point the producers and writers hadn't put a foot wrong when creating major long running characters. There were some dodgy guests who came in for a week or two, but everyone else had been solid. Suddenly there was this bland new family eating up lots of screen time and making melbourne seem yucky! Weird that Jane Seabourn (sp?) started writing on the show - didn't she do one of the episodes just before Alison was first seen? Yes, poor rona coleman having to watch all her family and pets die one by one - and then she goes to richmond hill and dies of a brain tumour! Watching Jeff trying to gas himself on the dvd made me laugh again after all these years... Weren't they introduced just as show went from 4 to 5 episodes a week in Australia, to stop existing cast getting overworked? Personally never liked way in which Rowena was written out cos it all went back to creepy jeff which just didn't seem worthy of her somehow...

I thought the O'Brien family were all extremely irritating - Jeff looked like a girl - very suspect - Katy and Mike were just soooo annoying and what was going on with Heather's eyebrows!

The person who played Jeff O`Brien was the worst actor in S&D history. Actually in all Australian soap history. I used to cringe whenever he was in a scene.

The person who played Jeff O`Brien was the worst actor in S&D history. Actually in all Australian soap history. I used to cringe whenever he was in a scene. I had a soft spot for Jeff - I think I just like lost causes. I saw his storylines recently for the first time and thought there was going to be a kind of teenage crush storyline between him and Luke, but alas it wasn't to be. It was always strange to see S&D shy away from that subject matter, especially seeing it so bold with almost everything else including incest and its empathic portrayal of prositutes. The O'Briens on the whole were pretty pointless though. And being a male in that family was definitely unlucky; as someone above said, even the dog got bumped off! As for the worst actor in S&D history.....that's a tough one. I think Michael Winchester could take the prize as Todd Fisher. There was always a certain bemusement to his scenes, as if the actor couldn't quite believe the lines he was been given to say!
